James's BMSI Apprenticeship

May 2, 2025

During National Apprenticeship Week this year, we caught up with one of our fantastic apprentices, James Middleton. His time with us at BMSI is a great example of the chances and backing we like to give young people starting in their careers. James himself puts it spot on when he talks about how good his apprenticeship has been so far.

Made to Feel Right at Home

James says that right from the start at BMSI, everyone's been welcoming, and loads of people in the company have been a proper help with his learning.

That friendly atmosphere is something we really go for, because we know it makes a big difference when you're finding your feet in a new job. Having experienced colleagues happy to pass on their knowledge is a massive boost for our apprentices, helping them grow in confidence.

Books and Getting Stuck In

James is particularly pleased with how his apprenticeship is set up. He thinks it's a brilliant mix of getting his qualifications sorted and properly understanding the building energy management systems (BEMS) he's working with.

This way of doing things means the theory clicks when you get your hands dirty. Plus, being part of a top-notch team on projects gives him brilliant real-world experience, making everything he learns stick and building great teamwork skills. The fact that he's so happy with how things are going shows the programme's working a treat and giving him some great opportunities.

Top Marks from the Boss!

It's not just James who's singing the praises. His manager, Steve Rolston, who's the Regional Projects Manager for London, has some great things to say about him, too. Steve reckons James is a bright lad who genuinely enjoys what he does. That kind of enthusiasm is a real winner and pushes him to do well. Steve says, “James is an articulate young man who genuinely enjoys his job. His approach, demeanour, and mannerisms reflect the qualities of an exceptionally talented BEMS engineer in the making. As our industry continues to become more technical and complex, we need individuals like James, who possess a unique skillset and attitude.”

Proper Support for Bright Futures

Here at BMSI, we're dead keen on giving our apprentices the best possible start to their careers. It's not just about the training; it's about making a welcoming place where everyone's encouraged to learn and get on. We truly believe that looking after the next generation of engineers is key to keeping our industry thriving and coming up with new ideas.

James's story is a cracking example of this in action, showing the good things that happen when you've got a supportive and well-thought-out apprenticeship scheme. We're proud of how our apprentices are doing, and we're looking forward to seeing James continue to grow and make his mark in the BEMS world.
