Employee Series: Why work for BMSI?

Why work for BMSI?

Here at BMSI we pride ourselves on not only being a UK leader in the installation and contract servicing of specialist building controls, but also on being a reputable employer that is dedicated to developing, nurturing and supporting our staff at every level.

Providing our staff with a positive, balanced and compassionate working environment, coupled with a progressive career path that focuses on the development of the individual and the unified, nationwide expansion of the business, ensures that we attract, and retain, the highest calibre of staff in the industry.

To learn more about what it’s like to work at BMSI, we asked National Support Sales Manager, Jen Johnson, to explain what it was that attracted her to a career at BMSI.

Why BMSI:

“What first attracted me to make the move to BMSI was my genuine appetite for new technology and innovation that was clearly inherent in the very fibre of the company. This, coupled with the fact that the business offered REAL national coverage, meant that working for BMSI was a really appealing prospect for someone, like myself, who was looking to grow and develop their career within the industry.”

The culture:

“Luckily, I was fortunate enough to have worked with some of the senior management team before, so I knew that their management style was conducive to my own and that I was going into an environment that would be beneficial for myself and for the growing success of the company. What struck me most about the team at BMSI was the notion that the business was big enough to deliver but small enough to be dynamic – a truly valuable asset for a successful company who are navigating their rapid growth in the current climate of the industry.

I was instantly made to feel very welcome at BMSI and I have felt like part of the family since day one. Everyone works seamlessly together to achieve the same, overarching goals of the business, and the excitement of the entire team around developing new technologies is palpable – which is so inspiring to be around!”

Unique employer:

“What I find makes BMSI so unique as an employer is the stability and experience of the team and the genuine desire of senior management to focus on employee development, training and safety – employees are truly valued, which in turn means that all employees are truly invested in helping to drive the success of the company as a whole.

If I could give advice to anyone looking to join the team at BMSI, it would be to come and see it for yourself. Visit the offices and speak to the people who work here, you’ll be hard pushed to find someone who isn’t fulfilled by the work that they do. If you are looking to make a move career wise, I would say that if you’re someone who is passionate about progression and is open to developing exciting new ideas, then BMSI is definitely the place for you!”

BMSI help to maintain the highest of standards at Shell Tower

BMSI is a key sub-contractor on the Shell Tower Refresh Project, working to upgrade systems across all floors of the historic building.

Shell Tower is located in the heart of Waterloo, within easy reach of BMSI’s London office, and has been owned and occupied by Shell International Ltd and its subsidiaries since it’s construction in the 1950s. Following the full refurbishment of the Tower in 2007, a project in which BMSI was also involved, the current development on the 26 storey tower involves changing the existing IQL Trend BMS Controllers to IQeco’s and upgrading all systems to the latest Trend IQ4/TONN and IQvision.

BMSI Major Projects Sales Manager, Tim Peperell has been working closely on the project and commented:

“BMSI is a prominent sub-contractor on the Shell Tower Refresh Project – the work is a fast-track fit-out with high level integration and many key phased handovers on a multi-level building, so ensuring that Shell’s very high Health and Safety standards are met is key to the success of the project. Clearly BMSI have undertaken this work with merit as we have already received subcontractor, and employee, of the month on multiple occasions.

Being involved in the development of such a historic and well-known building is a project that we’re very proud to be involved in – and by working alongside partners Shell, ACEOM, Overbury and Michael J Lonsdale, we’re confident of delivering on yet another high-profile contract in 2018 and beyond.”

BMSI & Skanska take on iconic Scalpel Project

BMSI are hard at work on The Scalpel; the newest addition to the most distinguished skyline in the city.

BMSI are working for Skanska on this latest prestigious development, located in the City on the corner of Lime Street. The new luxury high-rise building, as named by the Financial Times, will stand at 38 storeys tall and will house the new European Headquarters for W. R. Berkley. Remaining commercial space will also be let by other finance-based organisations, high-end retail outlets and premium eatery’s; securing the building’s place amongst many other large-scale, iconic buildings that continue to add to BMSI’s extensive list of City of London based projects.

BMSI has provided a full Trend/Tridium BMS and Energy Management System, comprising 80-plus control panels across the entire site and a building-wide EMS system operating from roof to basement. The BMS consists of approximately 20,000 points and an energy management system networked to over 1000 meters across the 41 floors.

BMSI Project Manager, Tony Springer, who has been overseeing the project commented:

“This is a great project that BMSI are proud to be involved with. The already- iconic status of the building is matched by the range and diversity of the work involved for the development, which will see our team provide, install and commission an efficient EMS that will ensure preventative energy maintenance rather than providing a reactive solution.

As the project nears its completion in the Summer of 2018, this is a venture that BMSI have very much enjoyed working on and we welcome many more projects on this scale in its wake.”

BMSI National Sales team have big plans for Northern Regions

BMSI’s 2018 looks ever more positive as it’s presence in the North East and Scottish regions continues to grow at rapid speed.

BMSI’s National Sales team have been working hard to ensure the success of the company’s developing Northern and Scottish regions. BMSI MD Speaks on Carillion Collapse

BMSI Managing Director, John Axten, has given his verdict on the Governments lack of clarity concerning Carillion’s downfall and the catastrophic impact that this could have on the construction industry.

Interviewed by Siobhan Kennedy of Channel 4 news last night, John spoke of his dismay at the actions of the Government in the wake of the fallout. BMSI, like many other small to middle sized sub-contractors, had assumed that given the Governments apparent confidence and involvement with many of Carillion’s public sector contracts, that they would be protected in an event such as this, an assumption that has proved to be disappointingly inaccurate.

Elaborating on his comments to Channel 4 last night, John commented:

“The news announcing Carillion’s collapse was a shock to us all – especially given the fact that the Government were still issuing public sector contracts to the company as recently as the start of January – but the reassurances that were issued from Westminster last week confirming that the Government would step in to resolve outstanding payments provided some relief at least for companies such as BMSI.

Unfortunately, these proclamations have proved false and we are looking at the prospect of a stack of unpaid bills for several contracts carried out before the 15th January 2018. What this looks like for BMSI is £240,000 in lost revenue, not to mention the staggering 1 billion that will be lost across Carillion’s 30,000 other suppliers. The ripple effects from this, coupled with the Governments continued resistance to provide certainty on the issue, will have devastating effects over the coming 3-4 months which could result in further bankruptcies across the wider industry. That being said, BMSI are in a fortunate position – we have an extremely healthy balance sheet and can ride out this particular storm – but for other companies, the situation is simply not good enough and the industry deserves better.”

John Axten has been Managing Director at BMSI for over 16 years and is an experienced and respected commercial quantity surveyor with unparalleled industry experience.
