BMSI put Employee Safety First with Revolutionary Security System

BMSI is one of the foremost Building Controls Companies in the UK, and staff are our most important asset. Our engineers are often required to work alone in potentially dangerous environments and their well being is of paramount of importance to us.

As a responsible employer, BMSI researched innovative solutions to the lone worker problem to ensure that the safety of our employees was at the forefront of our company ethos. As a result, the system that we now employ is at the technological forefront of ensuring staff safety across all of our sites.

BMSI started using the service (provided by Skyguard) in 2017, opting for the most advanced personal safety device, the MySOS Mandown.

BMSI Director, James Smith, describes how employees benefit from using the system:

“BMSI hold a strong belief in ensuring the safety of our employees, and these devices ensure they can be confident that there is always someone looking after them in an emergency.

The technology used by the ground-breaking device has revolutionised the safeguarding of BMSI staff. Reportable accident frequency rates have plummeted since  we started using the system – which is great for us, but is also a massive boost for our staff who can work onsite knowing that they are being looked after 24/7.”

These devices have the ability to raise an alarm in an instant – and if a lone worker is injured in a trip or fall, the alarm is automatically raised when the device senses a sudden impact. The device also demonstrates enhanced performance in poor signal areas and has a two-way voice calling feature for incapacitated workers who require assistance.

BMSI Ensure Sustainable Delivery at City of London Projects

BMSI is at the forefront of ensuring the sustainability of our deliveries across many of our City based projects in Central London.

At BMSI, we are keen to take a sustainable approach to delivery site controls as much as possible, particularly in densely populated areas such as the City of London, where many of our large-scale projects are currently in progress.

Ann example of a sustainable delivery driver leaving the BMSI Waterloo office to deliver site controls to our Lime St project in the City.

BMSI Director, James Smith, is pleased that the company is taking steps towards a more sustainable approach and commented:

“Sustainability and efficient energy management are at the very core of what BMSI do, so it’s only natural that we are looking to lead the way in moving towards a more sustainable approach to delivering site controls across our city sites.

Obviously, these resources are usually more widely available to use within the capital city, but we hope that this is something that will steadily become more viable across all of our regions in the UK. If we want sustainable cities and towns in the future, then businesses like BMSI need to take up the mantle of opting for more environmentally beneficial options when delivering on projects.”

BMSI get into the Carnival spirit at Heathrow!

BMSI recently attended the Heathrow Charity Ball, and they were sure to make it a night to remember – helping to raise an estimated £60,000!

The event, held in support of Heathrow Airport and their affiliated charities, took place at the Terminal Sofitel Hotel last month and was attended by BMSI staff who, as always, showed their support for a worthy cause, and fully immersed themselves in the frivolities of the evening.

The event consisted of a mixture of Venetian, Caribbean and Latin American carnival entertainment, which guests were able to enjoy whilst participating in silent auctions, raffles and competitions throughout the night. Gary Rackham, Regional Manager for Aviation at BMSI, who attended the event alongside the Aviation Team Managers and Directors, was delighted to be there to support Heathrow’s commitment to its charitable work:

“BMSI work very closely with Heathrow Airport on a number of projects, including the maintenance of the BMS Systems across Heathrow, and we’re proud to say that we have an extremely good working relationship with the team there. Therefore it was of the utmost importance to us that we showed our support for the event, and helped to raise money for the local causes that Heathrow has pledged to support.

The entertainment was of excellent calibre and it’s safe to say that the team really did make the most of the fun on offer – Heathrow have even, very kindly, displayed the photographic evidence on their website to remind us!

It’s very important for us at BMSI to support and aid our customers in every way that we can, not just as reliable contractors, but also in charitable endeavours such as this – and long may it continue!”

BMSI is a leading systems integrator of Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), and they continue to work closely with Heathrow Airport and their Delivery Integrators on the following projects: BMS Upgrade of Boilers & Chillers, Terminal 3 Pier 5 Asset Replacement, Terminal 4 LV MCC Panel Upgrade, maintenance of the BMS Systems across Heathrow.

BMSI celebrate with the industry at the BCIA Awards 2018!

The BCIA’s are the biggest awards in the controls and BEMS industry, and for 2018 the event didn’t disappoint as the BMSI team celebrated a successful year alongside industry peers.

BMSI were named finalists in two categories, including Independent Building Controls and BEMS Installer of the Year and Engineer of the Year categories, and the evening was a great opportunity for the team to celebrate a successful business year with the wider industry.

In attendance on the night was BMSI Director, John Axten, who took away many positives from the celebrations:

“The BCIA’s are always a highlight of the business year for the team, and despite not being named winners this year, we were still able to celebrate the prestige of being named finalists in two strong categories – plus one eager Director did win a rather competitive round on the Scalextric track on the night!”

What was also great to see was the BCIA’s emphasis on attracting the youth of today into the BEMS industry. As an employer, BMSI are always on the look-out for young, fresh talent to enrich the innovation and growth that a career at BMSI promotes, so it’s fantastic to see that BCIA is working so positively for the industry in this way.”

To learn more about what it’s like to work at BMSI, we asked National Support Sales Manager, Jen Johnson, to explain what it was that attracted her to a career at BMSI.

Why BMSI:

“What first attracted me to make the move to BMSI was my genuine appetite for new technology and innovation that was clearly inherent in the very fibre of the company. This, coupled with the fact that the business offered REAL national coverage, meant that working for BMSI was a really appealing prospect for someone, like myself, who was looking to grow and develop their career within the industry.”

The culture:

“Luckily, I was fortunate enough to have worked with some of the senior management team before, so I knew that their management style was conducive to my own and that I was going into an environment that would be beneficial for myself and for the growing success of the company. What struck me most about the team at BMSI was the notion that the business was big enough to deliver but small enough to be dynamic – a truly valuable asset for a successful company who are navigating their rapid growth in the current climate of the industry.

I was instantly made to feel very welcome at BMSI and I have felt like part of the family since day one. Everyone works seamlessly together to achieve the same, overarching goals of the business, and the excitement of the entire team around developing new technologies is palpable – which is so inspiring to be around!”

Unique employer:

“What I find makes BMSI so unique as an employer is the stability and experience of the team and the genuine desire of senior management to focus on employee development, training and safety – employees are truly valued, which in turn means that all employees are truly invested in helping to drive the success of the company as a whole.

If I could give advice to anyone looking to join the team at BMSI, it would be to come and see it for yourself. BMSI help to maintain the highest of standards at Shell Tower

BMSI is a key sub-contractor on the Shell Tower Refresh Project, working to upgrade systems across all floors of the historic building.

Shell Tower is located in the heart of Waterloo, within easy reach of BMSI’s London office, and has been owned and occupied by Shell International Ltd and its subsidiaries since it’s construction in the 1950s. Following the full refurbishment of the Tower in 2007, a project in which BMSI was also involved, the current development on the 26 storey tower involves changing the existing IQL Trend BMS Controllers to IQeco’s and upgrading all systems to the latest Trend IQ4/TONN and IQvision.

BMSI Major Projects Sales Manager, Tim Peperell has been working closely on the project and commented:

“BMSI is a prominent sub-contractor on the Shell Tower Refresh Project – the work is a fast-track fit-out with high level integration and many key phased handovers on a multi-level building, so ensuring that Shell’s very high Health and Safety standards are met is key to the success of the project. Clearly BMSI have undertaken this work with merit as we have already received subcontractor, and employee, of the month on multiple occasions.

Being involved in the development of such a historic and well-known building is a project that we’re very proud to be involved in – and by working alongside partners Shell, ACEOM, Overbury and Michael J Lonsdale, we’re confident of delivering on yet another high-profile contract in 2018 and beyond.”
