SPOTLIGHT ON…

Jen Johnson

National Support Sales Manager
BMSI

What three words would you use to describe your role at BMSI?

Collaboration

Solution

Innovation

What does a typical day look like for you at BMSI?

I’m not sure I’ve had a typical day yet! My role flexes with the business so it could be a 4am start to get to Glasgow or a 9am breakfast meeting, but whatever my whereabouts I spend as much of my time as possible with our support team meeting clients (new and old), researching new technologies and innovation and throwing challenges at our MediCentre (our remote bureau team) – got to keep them on their toes!

If you could switch jobs with someone at BMSI, who would it be?

I’ve always been interested in the technology and if I could start again I’d have love to have followed a truly technical route – so if I could switch jobs with someone that would have to be one of our concept design engineers in major projects so I could get my hands on a new iconic building.

What are your biggest professional challenges?

I’d say both mine and our sales teams biggest challenge is getting to the right solution for each of our customers – a lot of work goes into trying to understand the bigger picture so we have all the information we need to work with.

We’re very lucky to have specialists in our business that can support us with this, whether it’s sitting down with the clients IT team, understanding their requirements and how we can work together, or sat with the HR director if a business putting a strategy together around health and wellbeing.

What is the worst part of your job?

I’m not naturally an early riser to say the least, so crack of dawn starts are not my favourite!

Which employee gives you the most help in your role?

This is a really tricky question….I am involved with so many different parts of our business, so depending on what I’m trying to achieve I work with a number of great individuals who I’d be stuck without.

If I was pushed though, it would be a toss up between Keith Bankier (Director of Support Services) and Steve Culshaw (our MediCentre Manager) – I can always rely on them and they’re always there to challenge and throw ideas around with, which is imperative to business growth and development.

What would you change at BMSI?

BMSI is changing and improving all the time so it’s hard to pin that down on a business level, we saw a new technology we wanted to embrace 2 month ago, and as of last week it’s fully tested, trials run and is now available as a solution for our clients – we move pretty quickly!

Last month we discussed how we could reduce our carbon footprint and be smarter around some of our internal meetings, this month we have a central web based meeting platform in place which we hosted our monthly support sales meeting through earlier this week.

So I’m afraid I’m a bit stuck with this question!

What will be the best thing about working at BMSI in 2018?

I think the best thing about 2018 at BMSI for me, is I have no idea what I could be working on over the next 9 months – it’s fresh, innovative and new technology is coming to the market every day.

What advice would you give to new entrants into the company?

Talk to people, make your interests and goals known – as the company develops we need our people to develop so there is always new avenues appearing so don’t be shy about your ambitions.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I like to travel as far and wide as possible!

I also play guitar and piano, and enjoy the odd social drink now and again!

…and finally, what’s your Monday morning motto to get you through the week?

I don’t really have a moto…. but I do have a great morning playlist to get me up and ready to hit the ground running.
